Characteristics

The Cantabrian Chamois is the smallest of the subspecies of rupricae, and the mountain chains of the north of Spain it is the only place where it is possible to hunt it. With colors and customs very similar to the Pyrenean Chamois, the size of this trophy is considerably smaller than this one of his pyrenean brother.

We can find this specie in the Cordillera Cantábrica, a mountainous range situated on the north Spain, between the provinces of León, Asturias, Cantabria and Lugo.

Hunt of high mountain, surrounded with incomparable landscapes and with a fauna impossible to find in any other Europa’s side: Spanish ibex, roe-deer, deer, wolves and bears share habitat with the Cantabrian chamois.

OTHER ACTIVITIES IN CANTABRIAN AREA

Castilla y León is one of Europe’s largest regions. It is made up of nine provinces.

The rural tourism has become one of the biggest attractions in Castilla y León and brings in increasing numbers of travelers. As its centres (casas Rurales, posadas and centros de turismo rural) you will discover more than just quality installations.

All these accommodations options offers to the visitors the chance to enjoy the peace and quiet this land offers, as well as the chance to discover the people and their customs, and the wealth of gastronomy and magnificent cultural and environmental heritage of Castilla y León.

The large province of León offers the possibility to enjoy natural places and also beautiful places as the Cave of Valporquero or the city of León.

Cave of Valporquero

Situated in the heart of the mountains of León, next to another site of immense beauty: the Vagacervera Gorge. Just a million years old, this is Castilla y León’s youngest cave, formed during the Pleistocene, when the icy waters of the Valporquero Stream trickled silently between the limestone, forming the magnificent sight we can visit today. Inside visitors can admire flowing forms, columns, stalactites and stalagmites in the seven rooms that make up this cave. Some of the figures and rooms have been given names, such as ‘Fairies’, the ‘Stalactite Cemetery’ or ‘Solitary Column’ , inspired by the imagination of those that have admired them; capricious forms and figures including ‘The Phantom’ ‘Virgin and Child’, ‘Twins’ or ‘The Tower of Pisa’. This is also a great place for lovers of potholing, who can follow the ‘course of the waters’, a fascinating route that is guaranteed to surprise and delight. Open in september every day of the week from 10.00 to 18.00h

León city

The city of León has some of the most spectacular monuments in Spain: the Gothic Cathedral with the most beautiful stained glass in Europe, the Romanesque frecoes of the Collegiate Church of San Isidoro, know as the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque, and the most impressive facade of the Plateresque, the Hospital of San Marcos.

But what you will like more of León is how the city is lived, making the “tapas” a ritual as in the Barrio Humid. A wonderful program to enjoy alone or with family or Friends!

OTHER ACTIVITIES IN PYRENEAN AREA

The Pyrenees are a walker’s paradise. The whole area is traversed by a very dense network of marked trails; from a long hike to a family stroll, the trails of the Pyrenees are suitable for everyone.

The caves of Les Grandes Canalettes are located at a mere 300 metres from the unesco world Heritage medieval town of Villefranche-de-Conflent in the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, and at the foot of the Mont Canigou massif on the road to Corneilla-de-Conflent and Vernet-les-Bains. Come and spend a magical day with the family in one of the most beautiful caves in France. The caves are accessible to the general public but the notion of discovery and adventure are ever present throughout your visit into the bowels of the earth…

Villefranche de Conflent

Listed as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO because of its fortifications by Vauban, the fortified village of Villefranche-de-Conflent, situated at the confluence of the Têt, the Cady and the Rotja, at the foot of Mount Canigou, was founded at the end of the 11th century by a Count
of Cerdanya, in order to protect the valleys from invasion. It was then reinforced by Vauban in the 17th century, after the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659, to ensure its safety and that of Conflent. Encircled by solid fortifications, the medieval village of Villefranche-de-Conflent also features in the list of the most beautiful villages in France. Visitors who love old buildings can explore this ancient heritage: ramparts with fortified doors, the picturesque street, the Rue Saint-Jean, with many house fronts which figure in the inventory of Historic Monuments, the Saint-Pierre bridge over the Têt, the town hall belfry tower, the Church of St James (Saint-Jacques) with its beautiful 12th-century carved pink marble entrance… Art galleries, souvenir shops and local craft shops all offer plenty for shopaholics to enjoy. On the heights above Villefranche-de-Conflent you can see the outline of Fort Libéria, like a sentinel majestically overlooking the medieval village and the confluence of the three valleys. This remarkable edifice with wall-walks was constructed by Vauban in 1681, then reinforced in the 19th century under Napoleon III. An underground stairway called ‘The thousand steps’, which has 734 steps in fact, connects the fort with the village of Villefranche-de-Conflent. The Fort is accessible on foot for braver souls but can also be reached using the 4×4 shuttle bus which goes from the village.
